Patrice Gutierrez and Carol Osborne-Crow are the founders and owners of KangaWear Design, LLC, makers of MyRoo Tube, an easy to use top for Skin-to-Skin Contact. Together, they have 46 years of experience working with mothers, babies, and their families. They are also Registered Nurses, Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultants, and Kangaroo Care Certified.
After working with mothers and babies for many years, Patrice and Carol discovered there was a need for a product that mothers could use with their babies during Skin-to-Skin Contact.
Skin-to-Skin Contact, also called Kangaroo Care, is the practice of holding a newborn bare chest to bare chest with mother directly after birth. Research shows that this simple practice provides great health benefits for babies, especially premature babies. However, because mothers sometimes have difficulty holding their babies for extended periods (sometimes hours), sessions end out of fatigue or boredom. Hospitals had no product to alleviate this problem. Instead, makeshift items were being put together to hold baby in position, which can be unsafe.
So Patrice and Carol came together and brainstormed ideas for a top that would assist mothers and babies with safe Skin-to-Skin Contact. Starting in a living room and still working full time jobs, the two spent months testing multiple fabrics and different designs. Finally, they agreed the only way to ensure comfort and security without stress points on mother or baby was to have a seamless design made from stretchy material. The tube-like design was called MyRoo Tube.
Together, they founded their company, KangaWear Design, LLC. After a year of developing the prototype, they were ready to move forward. With little business experience, they entered a local small business competition, IdeaWF, in their hometown of Wichita Falls, TX. Competing against more than 20 other small businesses, they won 1st place! Using the cash and prizes from the competition and assistance from friends, Carol and Patrice launched their business, marketing MyRoo Tube to mothers and hospitals.
